monstera
project on pattern and process

This project was the final result of a ten week long class on the exploration of pattern, form, and surface.  The act of doing and then thinking was our philosophy—something that is difficult for a design-thinking trained mind. I pulled from the habits I broke and built in this course to create and then digitally capture a time-based pattern.

Process

I projected the reflection of light off of two folded ends of mylar material through a large-sized monstera deliciosa plant. This resulted in lovely golden silhouettes of the monstera leaves casted onto the walls behind it. When I directed the phone light around the mylar at different speeds, a multi-layered stop-motion type of effect occured. I instructed my two assistants (aka my friends) to wear the mylar scarf and control the speed of light while I captured the patterns happening on the walls. (See behind the scenes photos below to understand what I mean.)

The final result is a digital experience. I kept the audio captured by the camera as ambient background noise, and because some of the real-time reactions of awe and excitement from myself and my assistants were too good not to include.

Below are still frames pulled from the video. Below that are gifs made from a few selected clips.

Compendium

This compendium is an organized reflection of the work that led me to create monstera. It contains bits and pieces from my classwork on the investigation and experimentation in form and pattern-making. The final product was a printed expandable poster booklet.
